Do you do "pro bono?"

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Would you like some free advice, worth more than it costs you?... It'll only take me a few minutes to listen to your problem -  and God willing, I may know enough about the issues in the involved area of the law to give you some free advice;  and if that advice ends up helping you out even a little bit, that'll bless me too! ...

Too often people look for pro bono lawyers and they find neither "pro" nor "bono," meaning they end up believing that they got what they paid for, nothing "pro" (PROfessional) or positive, and perhaps even something negative - and what is "bono" anyway, aside from something to do with "sonny bono"  or that other singer?

The "Pro bono publico" (usually shortened to pro bono) is a phrase derived from Latin meaning "for the public good." Keep in mind that the "public" good may not always and necessarily be for your own good.

I am not a legal aid or Florida legal services criminal lawyer - and I am not a Florida pro bono lawyer, but I would be more than happy to give you some free advice if it'll end up helping you out in life. The beauty in this sort of giving:  You may end up getting blessed by the help, you'll be appreciative and tell all your friends, and it'll all come back around to bless me too - and besides, even if none of that happens, it really is true what He tells us in the Bible, "it's better to give than to receive." (Acts 20:35)

What I believe He means by this scripture, is that we get that good feeling simply knowing that we selflessly gave of ourselves, and that someone may have benefited. We can give a gift of money or a gift of free advice or a gift of "time" - either way, if we pour ourselves into the life of another human being, God will bless the giving, and it's usually a blessing or gift on both ends, to both the recipient AND the giver.

Having said all this, remember that it's the "advice" that's free - as well as the time involved in listening and giving the advice during this initial free phone consultation, and not the representation itself, should we agree that my office would represent your interests. We will agree on the appropriate fee for legal representation, if we decide that my office should get involved as an advocate in your case.

Why is it that nobody asks the mechanics in town whether they repair cars pro bono - and the same with grocers or any other business of profession in town?  People expect that they have to pay the grocer or the doctor or the air conditioning repairman, or the plumber or carpenter or whoever provides them with a service; and yet they will often ask the lawyers, "Do you do pro bono?"

It's not so much a complaint as it is a genuine curiosity, why nobody else is asked this question. It may be as simple as the fact that lawyers do occasionally provide services or advice for free, especially for those in genuine need, and some states even require the lawyers to do a certain number of hours of "pro bono."

There are quite a few lawyers who do a fair amount of work for free ... or for very little money, just by virtue of the fact that many people are truly hurting financially and cannot otherwise afford to pay the going rate - or even a greatly reduced rate for the representation; and on that note, most lawyers can certainly understand this reality and the financial plight of many families.

The perplexing issue that can be a little disconcerting, however, is the attitude of some of the folks making the "pro bono" inquiry. Some inquiring minds appear to have a presumptuous spirit of expectation, and therein lies the rub. Christ Himself said, "the laborer is worthy of his wages." (Luke 10:7)

Most of us wouldn't think to ask the mechanic if he would replace the brakes or rebuild the motor or otherwise repair our vehicle for free, and yet we'll ask the lawyer to overhaul a fairly significant problem in our personal lives - something arguably more important than our vehicle's repair condition.

For what it's worth, we love helping the folks who do NOT have that presumptuous spirit of expectation, those people who have a sweet spirit, and a gentle, kind, humble and appreciative respect for another's time. Bottom line:

Please feel free to call me anytime and tell me of your problem or concerns, and if I can offer any decent and informative, free advice, I am more than happy and even privileged to be of help.

I truly hope that you can hear my heart in all this - that I would LOVE to be of help, even if this means only on the phone providing you with hopefully some good information or advice!

A friend,

John Contini

What happens if I get into a fight in traffic?

Answer: You get the hell beat out of you, unless you can fight real well. Seriously, this is a very bad idea, since people are getting shot and killed in these road rage incidents all the time these days. It's a very dangerous world we're living in today.

The legal answer, however, is: If you are in a "road rage" situation and you so much as put your hand inside the other person's car, it is a felony called "Burglary of a Conveyance." Putting you hand on the outside of their car is not a crime, but if your hand "breaks and enters" the imaginary plane or airspace within their car, that is considered under the law to be "breaking and entering," otherwise known in Florida as a "burglary." And, if you touch the driver (or anyone in that car) against their will, the felony is then upgraded to "Burglary of a Conveyance with a Battery," punishable by 30 years!
